Warri Cup

Highlights from 2018:
Sunday 18th March 2018 –
Sailing Vessels took to the water for the Warri Cup, Airlie Beach to Langford Island and return race. With South Easterly winds between 15 to 25 knots and smooth seas the 3 divisions had a perfect sail out and return. Abell Point Yacht Club and Whitsunday Sailing Club combined for an inter club race. Kevin Foggarty prepared the handicaps, was the race starter and recorded the finish for the fleet. Kevin’s job as handicapper was not an easy one with so many different vessels and so many new vessels and new skippers but was well done and appreciated very much by Abell Point Yacht Club and the competitors. Thank you Kevin.

Race presentations and get together with skippers and crews was held at Abell Point Marina on Ocean Club which is proving to be a fantastic Venue for Club Functions.  Many of the event highlights have been captured in the gallery pictures below.

The History of the Warri Cup
The “Warri Cup” is the major annual Club race, heading out from Airlie Beach to Langford Island and return (approx. 32 nautical miles).  It is also APYC’s oldest continuous race. There are three racing divisions: Multihull, Spinaker monohull and Non-Spinaker monohull.  Participating vessels are handicapped as appropriate according to race rules.
The “Warri “ was a local boat that Airlie local residents, Celia and Chris Taylor owned.  After Chris sadly passed away, Celia and the APYC decided to hold the “Chris Taylor” memorial race, a course around Langford Island and back. This course remains unchanged today.  The race name has morphed to become the “Warri Cup” and the trophy, which is actually a model of the Warri, was made by Celia and Chris’s friend,  Bill Gleeson.
