About UsThe Abell Point Yacht Club is based at the Abell Point Marina at Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays. The Club caters for both sail and power vessels with a program of races, cruises and a number of major events.
The Abel Point Yacht Club was formed in 1997 by a group of local sailors. The Club’s activities grew over the years to include Friday afternoon races, a number of day and offshore races and the iconic Dent to Dunk Race and Rally. After Cyclone Yasi badly damaged Dunk Island in 2011, this annual event was reborn as the Coral Coast Race and Rally from Airlie Beach to Magnetic Island. The Club for many years called the Sorrento Bar and Restaurant and the Abel Point Marina its home and still has a close relationship with Sorrento.
The purchase and substantial upgrading of the Abell Point Marina by Paul Darrouzet from 2013 provided the opportunity for the club to develop a strong, mutually beneficial, alliance with the marina which has helped to supercharge the rejuvenation of the club. A formal agreement between the club and the marina is now in place and the marina’s new Function Centre will open as the “Abell Point Yacht Club” in December.
The Club was formally incorporated as the Abell Point Yacht Club (adopting the historically correct spelling of Abell) on 29 October 2015 and “Power and Sail” was added as our tag line. The Club’s program is designed to offer on and off water activities, with an emphasis on fellowship and social interaction to complement the historical sailing program.
Membership of the Abell Point Yacht Club is open to anyone who has an interest in boating.
So why not join us and enjoy the best that the Whitsundays has to offer…
The Abell Point Yacht Club has now entered into a agreement with the Abell Point Marina to formalise the relationship between the club and the marina with respect to the use and operation of the new Abell point Yacht Club currently under construction by the marina. The new premises will operate as a clubhouse and a five-star function centre in this spectacular location. This agreement promises a great future for the Club.
To date alliance with the Abell Point Marina has run very smoothly and has proved to be greatly advantageous to both the marina and the club. The opening of the clubhouse and the assumption of responsibilities by the club for the clubhouse will bring this relationship even closer.
Sorrento has for many years been the meeting place and watering hole for APYC members. The venue continues to be one of our favourite places at the Marina.
APYC is affiliated with Yachting Queensland, which provides our membership data base and “Silver Cards”.
As the Club develops it is envisaged that more mutually beneficial partnerships will be established with local businesses.
