About Us

The Abell Point Yacht Club is based at the Abell Point Marina at Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays. The Club caters for both sail and power vessels with a program of races, cruises and a number of major events.

Abell Point Yacht Club was formed in 1997 and continues to go from strength to strength. Membership is rapidly growing, and a substantial portion of membership comprises couples which reflects our aim to be an all-inclusive boating club.  Our committee members are friendly and approachable.

The Club’s program is designed to offer on- and off-water activities, with an emphasis on fellowship and social interaction to complement the historical sailing program.  We welcome you to join us.

You can see by our pictures that our Club members have a great time at our events.  We host a monthly social night at the Ocean Club at Abell Point Marina, organise regular casual weekend cruises in the local area, hold the “Warri Cup” – our major annual Club race from Airlie Beach around Langford Island and back, and the “Coral Coast Race and Rally” – our annual rally from Airlie Beach to Magnetic Island.  Our members also support the community including Shag Island Yacht Club events (most of us are Shaggers), and the renowned round-the-world sailing event, the Clipper Carnival.

We have a proud presence in the Abell Point Marina and around the Whitsundays. You can promote your pride in being a member of our Club by wearing items from our Club merchandise. Details are available on the Merchandise page of this website.

The Abel Point Yacht Club (APYC) was formed in 1997 by a group of local sailors. The Club was formally incorporated as the Abell Point Yacht Club (adopting the historically correct spelling of Abell) on 29 October 2015 and “Power and Sail” was added as our tag line.

Over the years, the Club’s activities grew and have included Friday afternoon races, a number of day and offshore races and in the day, the Club ran the iconic Dent to Dunk Race and Rally. However, after Cyclone Yasi badly damaged Dunk Island in 2011, this annual event was reborn as the Coral Coast Race and Rally from Airlie Beach to Magnetic Island. This is the major annual rally of our region and attracts around 15-20 participants, with numbers growing each year.

The Club has always been based in the surrounds of Abell Point Marina.  Initially we called the Sorrento Bar and Restaurant home, and after many years we relocated to Lure at Abell Point Marina in 2014. In 2018, the Club moved its base to the Ocean Club – set within the beautiful marina itself.  We still enjoy a close relationship with Sorrento Bar and Restaurant and the Lure reception venue.

Membership of the Abell Point Yacht Club is open to anyone who has an interest in boating. So why not join us and enjoy the best that the Whitsundays has to offer?!
